In the first step, the concepts of Future Imaginaries in futures studies and Imaginaries in sociology and anthropology are considered separately using a literature analysis, and their understanding of societal expectations of the future is examined. In addition, comparable approaches to or already existing uses of Future Imaginaries are analyzed.

The first step provides the material combined in the second step to outline the idea of Future Imaginaries and to describe their characteristics and components as well as possible inconsistencies. In addition, it is assessed how they relate to existing concepts that also play a role in the context of societal imaginaries of the future.

In the last step, different approaches for conceptualizing methods based on Future Imaginaries are outlined and briefly illustrated using the example of artificial intelligence.
